Statues of the Buddha, found in many northern districts of Tamil Nadu, are kept in local museums, said School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said.
“In many districts, the local villagers have adopted the statues of the Buddha and Jain monks. The government also keeps the statues in the local museums after getting permission from the villagers,” the Minister said responding to Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) member D.Ravikumar.
Arguing that the existence of Buddhism bore testimony to the casteless society prevailed in Tamil Nadu long ago, Mr. Ravikumar said the government should take steps to preserve these statues found in Ariyalur, Perambalur and Villupuram districts.
